Frequently Asked Questions

We know starting your own Internet broadcast can feel intimidating at first, but our FAQs are here to help you jump right in!

Should I use SHOUTcast or Icecast?

Overall, there are very few differences between the SHOUTcast and Icecast that actually matter. Some people just prefer one or the other, or might have a specific need so we offer both. Some people like that Icecast is OpenSource, and other people like that SHOUTcast is not.
Historically, the SHOUTcast stream directory tends to get more traffic, however this really doesn't matter if you already have a listener base or if you are promoting the stream on your own.

What exactly is an AutoDJ and why do I need it?

In short, an AutoDJ allows you to schedule audio to play when you are not live. You can also run your stream from AutoDJ 24/7.
To use AutoDJ, upload any MP3 audio programming to your account, and then use our tools to create scheduled playlists. (These files will need to be the same bitrate as your live stream.) You can choose files to be played in heavy, light, or standard rotation.
This is a great option for users who have poor internet connections and/or cannot do a live stream all the time. You can even schedule your ads, promos, and any other content, so your listeners won't even know it's not live.

What computer specs do you recommend?

Making sure your comptuer meets the following specs will mean a better quality broadcast:

  • Windows 7, 8, or 10. We do not suggest XP or Vista
  • 64 bit processor running at least 3GHz
  • 4GB RAM or more
  • Make sure your computer is up to date
  • Do not run other programs while doing a live stream
  • We strongly recommend a dedicated hard wired internet connection with a consistent upload speed

How do I advertise my stream to get more listeners?

Self-promotion on social media, your website, and word of mouth are some of the best ways to promote your network and grow listenership. Contests and giveaways are another great way to create buzz around your network.
Shoutcast and Icecast both have a directory that you can be listed on:
